Wearing a flattering outfit can make any woman feel so much more confident! But what makes an outfit flattering? The easiest route to a flattering outfit in my opinion is a one-piece outfit (such as a dress). This is why I have so many dress posts already! But what about a two-piece outfit?
I believe that to achieve the most flattering look when matching the tops to the bottoms is to ensure that both parts of the outfit compliment each other in the most flattering way! So here are my 5 best tips for matching a skirt with a top in the most flattering way…
5 steps to the flattering top & skirt outfit
Create a balanced silhouette: I believe that this step is the most important! For instance a tight skirt looks great with a looser blouse, while a full skirt works best with a tight-fitting top.
Of course you can sometimes wear a tight skirt and tight top if you want to feel EXTRA-sexy. But then it’s kind of like putting on both bright lipstick and a bright eyeshadow. You’re risking to go overboard! Similarly wearing a boxy top and a full skirt is like not wearing any make up at all! Super-cozy, yet… not very flattering!
Figure out which top and skirt styles look best on your body-shape! For instance I love the fit and flare skirts because my body type is what’s aka a “pear” (small chest, small waist and larger hips). A very tight skirt can exaggerate my hips. At the same time I like showcasing my thin waist. This is why a tight top and a full skirt had always been my winning combo!
Now, a tight skirt can potentially look good on me if it’s rather short, because the rest of my legs are rather thin. Yet I know that a deep V-neck tops that open too much chest don’t ever look good on me! They make my upper part look flat!
At the same time, if your body-shape is more like an “apple” (larger waist, smaller hips), accentuating your hips and concealing your waist with a flowy top would benefit you the most!
Match your outfit to your height. For instance I amn’t petite, yet I’m not a 5’10! (I am 5’5 for the record 🙂 ). That’s why the tops that benefit me the most can never be too long, as well as the high-waisted skirts that look great on the taller girls, don’t ever look good on me!
Match your outfit to… your personality! Oh, and to your lifestyle, as well! I actually believe that this step the most important! Why? It’s because no matter how balanced your outfit is, if it doesn’t make you FEEL beautiful – you will never end up looking great!
With that said – if you FEEL great wearing a tight mini & tight top combo – then just go for it! And if your comfort zone is a flowy midi or maxi skirt – then own it! 🙂
Finally, how do you figure all these things out? My best tip for this is easy: By trying them on! And after awhile, from paying attention to how a certain skirt length or a top shapes make you look and feel – you’ll know exactly what looks most flattering on you!So what do you think? Which of these tips did you like the most? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below! 🙂
