Hi, Dear Friend!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and… you know what I just spotted in my local Ralph’s Market at their “Seasonal Goodies” shelf? 🙂 A Holiday Mug that says:
“Get your FAT pants Ready”
I mean… I’m serious! There was that mug and I should’ve taken a pic of it, but I was shopping with my kids and… you know how it gets… Anyway, I had to give up my cell phone to my younger son so that I could at least get what’s on the shopping list and get out… 🙂
But that slogan on that mug was SO FUNNY because… it is ridiculously true for most of us when it comes to getting through the Holiday Season! And what’s also true is that at one point I, just like everybody else, had to get my “fat” dress/pants/ something ready! Because I DID gain weight during the Holidays! …Lots of it! 🙂
…Inspired by this mug I decided to write this Healthy Holidays Series on how NOT to gain weight over the Holidays and… to STILL have lots of fun! (Because we should NEVER compromise the FUN part when it comes to the Holidays!)
…In My Staying In Shape Strategies post I wrote about how difficult it’s been at times for me to lose weight and to stay fit… But after going through all that I know that there is hope for us, weak human beings! And that hope is in finding the right TOOLS that can help us control ourselves without having to fight against ourselves! …The tools that can make you feel like YOU are in charge of what’s happening to your body; the tools that will help you enjoy the life full of joy without senses of guilt or deprivation!
…Today let me tell you all about my personal BIGGEST CHALLENGE when it comes to losing weight and/or staying in shape. Here it is: I can NEVER have enough of the good stuff!
And to think about it: when you’re enjoying yourself as you’re eating something extra-delicious it is VERY DIFFICULT to STOP!!! Right? I mean… how can you possibly stop having Such A Good Time with that yummy and comforting food?! For me – it is… SUPER-DIFFICLUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…But like I said, there IS a SALVATION FOR US, poor weak human beings! 🙂
So here’re my two tools for dealing with this challenge:
When I cook I usually make my most decadent creations lower in calories! So that I know that I can take that extra bite without having to think about it! (And I’ll ALWAYS want that extra bite!)
But if one serving of that delicious dessert lands less than the mere 35 calories, I KNOW that I can enjoy it without thinking about how much I’ve already had!
Please heck them out! (Hello, Post-Thanksgiving (Sweet, Healthy, No-Guilt) Diet!) 🙂
But… what if I want to have something “Real”. I mean… what if I just want to go for the plain, good-old CHOCOLATE? Yeah! The healthy, indulgent, “real” but SUPER-HIGH-CALORIE piece of chocolate? Or if it’s a super-yummy hummus dip, or some healthy avocado?
And here’s my developed over the years of struggling solution: I DRINK!
(…Umm… I know that it says “Just Add Coffee” on my mug. It’s just I also LOVE my coffee, but only one of these cupfuls a day. The rest of the time I love drinking lots and lots of tea from this giant mug!)
…I ALWAYS make sure that I NEVER-EVER-EVER have a super-high-calorie snack without having a large zero-calorie drink with it! And by large… I mean – the Jumbo size! And this is why drinking LOTS of liquid with my food is my PERFECT Real-Foods challenge solution…
Because… How can a few almonds or a quarter of an avocado or two little pieces of chocolate possibly fill you up? It’s impossible! They are TOO TINY! But what if you begin this meal with a large cup of water? Or, even better my favorite Caramel Vanilla Black Tea that doesn’t need any sweeteners because it’s aroma is already so satisfying and soothing!
That 0-calorie drink fills you up and gives you the sense of satisfaction! And if you only take little tiny bites of that high-calorie food as you’re drinking that drink, I promise – you’ll still feel that super-rich taste in your mouth! But it WILL NOT feel TINY!
And here’s one last thing: I always try to begin this kind of a meal with drinking lots of liquid and I only enjoy about 1/2 of that super-rich meal WITH the drink. But AFTER that large drink has made me feel really full… This is when I enjoy the other half of that super-yummy-rich meal making sure to devour every single little bite! And I swear to you: no matter how tiny that piece of chocolate was it feels almost like I’ve had the whole big bar! …Only without the extra guilt and the physical sense of discomfort! 🙂
So tell me, what’s your biggest Staying In Shape Challenge?
